The R.M.Williams Heritage Rugby Ball

Introducing the R.M.Williams Heritage Rugby Ball, a celebration of Australian leather craft with a playful spirit. Rugby has long been a part of the R.M.Williams world and now our bestselling rugby jerseys have a handcrafted counterpart – one that shares in an appreciation of quality and endurance.

Tom Farrah of Farrah Design in Melbourne was entrusted with bringing these special pieces to life, drawing on a lifetime of leatherwork experience and a love of the sport. His meticulous approach to cutting and shaping each ball to a strict set of measurements has resulted in a product steeped in history, yet reinforced with the advanced capabilities of modern craft. He explains,

“We based the design and shape on a standard rugby union ball, starting with the modern, rounder shape then making adjustments to transport it back in time through the archives.”

“The final, tapered shape is slimmer than current union balls through the mid-section, with the thicker leather construction helping to maintain the look and feel.” He adds, “throughout the process we blended a small amount of artistic license with a serious appreciation for the parameters of the sport. The clean R.M.Williams graphics are the perfect finishing touch, adding to its vintage look.”

In addition to the wealth of consideration that went into the product design, the leather craftsmanship behind each piece is worthy of note. We connected with Daniel Aldridge, Special Projects Manager at R.M.Williams to discuss the project:

“We’re incredibly proud to have partnered with Farrah Design on the production of our limited edition rugby balls. They’re experts in this field and stitch each ball by hand, using 18 unique processes to bring the product to life,” Daniel explains. “The end result is a fully functioning rugby ball that can be used for sport, though I predict a few R.M.Williams collectors will be giving it pride of place on the mantel as a modern heirloom.”

Only 50 units of this limited edition ball have been crafted, using premium leather from one of our partner tanneries in Queensland. Daniel notes,

“Each ball is over a day in the making and represents an artisanal approach to quality and detail. It’s a showcase of craft in the purest form.”
