The Goodyear welt process involves stitching a leather welt strip to the insole of the boot, creating a lip of leather that the sole can then be stitched to. It’s worlds apart from more common, modern methods of boot making in which these elements are joined using cement glue, and instead creates a boot of lasting substance.
This humble strip of leather works hard for your boots, so you don’t have to. In addition to increased durability, the Goodyear welt enables the boot to be easily resoled and repaired, extending its natural lifespan.
In taking this extra step in the production process, we can ensure thousands of extra steps for you, and your R.M.Williams boots.
Our founder believed that a boot made well could last a lifetime, and over the past nine decades, we’ve proven this statement true, time and time again. The Goodyear welt is a vital ingredient in this sense of staying power, allowing for an easy resoling process without compromising on the structural integrity or comfort of the boot. It’s for this reason that we often see customers getting around in the same pair of RMs for half a century.
