As we prepare to celebrate 200 years of the Sydney Royal Easter Show, R.M.Williams’ Head of Heritage and Heartland Marketing - and resident show expert, Terry Goodear shares his highlights from this year’s packed line-up of displays, parades and not-to-be-missed bicentennial events.
A visit to The Hut is a great way to get to know R.M.Williams and the craftsmanship behind our famous leather goods. It’s a window into our Adelaide workshop, where you can learn more about the heritage skills and techniques used by our team of artisans, as they handcraft boots and accessories for customers around the world. This year, we’ll have custom-made belts available to purchase, as well as a special selection of RE•MADE leather boots, each lovingly restored by our Boot Repair team. I’ll be there each day, so stop by and say G’day!
Rodeos have been a fixture of the show since 1931, with horsemen from far and wide competing in a series of events including the Bull Ride, Bareback, Saddle Bronc and Steer Wrestling. The events will run for six nights from 14th-19th April at the GIANTS Stadium, with a prize giving presentation on the final night for the worthy champions in each discipline.
New for 2022, the Colours of the Outback fireworks are an explosive visual experience, drawing on the vivid tones of the great Australian landscape. Sit back and enjoy the nightly display, whilst the soul-stirring sound of the didgeridoo echoes around the main arena.
The iconic Grand Parade has been central to the Royal Sydney Easter Show since 1907 and is thought to be the first of its kind in the world. A celebration of Australian agriculture, the procession features Sydney Royal Competition winners including animals, producers, champion woodchoppers and future community leaders. Observe the parade in silence (the four-legged participants aren’t used to the roar of a crowd!) and engage in a well-deserved round of applause when the event comes to a close. The Grand Parade will take place in the GIANTS Stadium on April 9th, 11th and 16th.
Journey back in time at the Good Old Days Heritage Arena, to discover an outstanding collection of agricultural artefacts from years gone by. The show harks back to the early years of agricultural development in Australia and showcases the ingenuity of farmers from across the nation, as they met annually to discuss bright new ideas and ways of improving their trade. The heritage village includes displays of antique horse-drawn machinery, wheat and wool transportation techniques and the classic Australian invention, the Furphy Water Cart.
Ellerston stockman Murray Wilkinson leads this daily showcase of working dog talent, featuring cattle and sheep generously loaned by the Packer family. Having worked with dogs and livestock from a young age, Murray has developed his own secret language to communicate with the creatures using nothing but whistles. Watch on as he instructs a talented team of dogs to manoeuvre cattle and sheep around an obstacle course at the GIANTS Stadium – you’ve got to see it to believe it.
The Street Parades are a nod to shows of years gone by, with teams of bullocks, camels and donkeys taking to the streets of the showgrounds in a display of agricultural livestock. The processions take place twice daily, so make sure to listen out for the sounds of wagons hitting the pavement.
